Hon. Ernest Norgbey, Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee in Parliament, has expressed confidence in President Mahama’s School Sports Authority policy. In an interview with ABC Sports, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman Constituency lauded the policy, calling it transformative and with the potential to discover sporting talent that could lead to national success.
Norgbey, a three-term lawmaker, pledged that the Committee on Youth and Sports would play a crucial role in ensuring the policy’s successful implementation.
During his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President John Mahama announced plans to establish the School Sports Authority to enhance sports talent identification and development.
In response to this announcement, Norgbey emphasized the need for an authority dedicated to schools (both basic and senior high schools), under the supervision of the National Sports Authority. “We have the National Sports Authority, but we are still facing challenges. If we set up the School Sports Authority to be supervised by the National Sports Authority, I see no problem with that,” he stated.
Norgbey also described the initiative as a “laudable idea” that would help uncover the talents present in schools across the country. “Back then, when the Inter-School and Inter-College Sports were at their peak, the Black Starlets, Satellites, and Meteors performed creditably,” he added.
“The successful implementation of the School Sports Authority policy will help discover untapped talent in the villages and hinterlands,” Norgbey concluded.
