Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports in Parliament, Hon. Ernest Henry Norgbey, has expressed surprise at the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to retain Head Coach Otto Addo while making changes to the backroom staff.
This comes after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations. Following the disappointing outcome, many football fans, analysts, and journalists called for the dismissal of Addo and the entire technical team due to the heartbreak caused by the team’s performance.
The Black Stars finished at the bottom of their group, with Angola and Sudan securing qualification, while Niger placed third. In response, the GFA relieved Assistant Coach Joseph Laumann of his duties and appointed Black Satellites Coach Desmond Offei to replace him.
However, Hon. Norgbey, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman Constituency, voiced his confusion over the GFA’s decision to keep Addo. He questioned the logic behind this move, stating, “It makes absolutely no sense to change the other coaches while keeping the Head Coach.

Not only in football, but if you’re leading a group and the group fails, the leader takes the fall.” He further explained, “If a contractor is handed a project and his workers do not execute it perfectly, the contractor is held responsible.”
“I see no reason why the backroom staff were dismissed while the Head Coach was allowed to continue. This is where you realize there is a problem with the Ghana Football Association. Something is wrong at the GFA.”
The Black Stars will next face Chad on March 21, 2025, in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, followed by a match against Madagascar three days later. Currently, Ghana sits second in Group I, behind Comoros on goal difference.
