The Executive Director of the Peasant Farmers Association, Bismark Owusu Nortey, has expressed disappointment with the government for failing to include irrigation in the budget presented by the Finance Minister.
In an interview with ABC News Gh, he criticized the government for not addressing irrigation facilities, which were expected to be implemented this year.
He mentioned that the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana had hoped for allocations to ongoing dam projects, such as the Pwalugu project, to ensure that when the country faces a dry spell, farmers would have access to irrigation facilities.
Meanwhile, the executive director of the peasant farmers association called on the government to be diligent in the implementation of its agricultural policies in the 2025 budget, especially in the distribution of seeds to farmers to ensure the right and deserving farmers are covered.
“Procurement of seeds are normally given these kind of contracts at the detriment of farmers.
“And they procure low quality or substandard input were the farmers cannot even use it.
“So if the ministry should be mindful about this past and ensure that in rolling out this program, the right people, the right procurement processes are followed.
“And the program is properly targeted to make sure that the local farmers located in the respective communities are those who will benefit.
