The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is grappling with a staggering debt of over GH₵23 million owed by customers just in the Western Region.
This was revealed by the Acting Chief Manager, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie in an interview on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
The alarming situation calls for immediate action, as Mr. Barnie emphasized that the company is facing operational challenges due to the non-payment of bills, which directly affects its capacity to procure essential materials for water treatment.
In an effort to address this dire predicament, the GWCL is launching a comprehensive revenue mobilization campaign aimed at recovering the outstanding debts.
Mr. Barnie highlighted the critical nature of this initiative, stating that it is vital for sustaining water supply operations in the region.
He noted that the total arrears owed to the company across the country exceed GH₵800 million, with the Western Region accounting for a significant portion of this debt.
This situation underscores the importance of customer responsibility in supporting the operational strength of the company.
To recover these debts, the GWCL plans to implement an intensive strategy that includes house-to-house visits to collect outstanding payments before the end of December.
Mr. Barnie stressed that disconnections will be a last resort, urging customers to fulfill their financial obligations promptly.
