Ahead of today’s parliamentary sitting at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the media, emphasizing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to playing a constructive role in the upcoming 9th Parliament.
“Everyone knows their smoothness level; we will be a constructive minority in the 9th Parliament,” he stated.
This session follows an official circular from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the venue for the sitting, which holds significant political importance.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, in a notice dated December 2, summoned Parliament to resume in light of the recent political developments and the shift in power following the December 7 elections.
In the elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged with a parliamentary majority, changing the balance of power in the legislature. Prominent NPP MPs, including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah Kubi, lost their seats, signaling a substantial shift in the parliamentary landscape.
NDC’s John Dramani Mahama also triumphed in the presidential race over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reinforcing the party’s dominant position.
Speaker Bagbin had previously postponed a pre-election sitting, despite calls from the Majority Caucus to address urgent legislative matters, which sparked debate among lawmakers.
Today’s sitting is expected to focus on critical post-election transitions, legislative priorities for the incoming administration, and key governance issues moving forward.
