President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the Ghana Football Association (GFA) accountable to the public, particularly regarding budgetary allocations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the need for full transparency in government spending on national teams.

“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams,” he declared. “The budget presented by the FA and other sports associations must be known by the public.”

The directive comes amid growing calls for financial accountability in Ghanaian football, with concerns raised over opaque budgeting processes and mismanagement of funds.

President Mahama stressed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will closely scrutinize the GFA’s budget submissions to ensure funds are properly allocated.

“I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable to the people of Ghana as we prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers,” he stated.

With Ghana aiming to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the government’s commitment to transparency and financial discipline is expected to reassure stakeholders and ensure resources are efficiently managed.
