A new survey by Africa Policy Lens has uncovered a striking political trend ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections: 48.4% of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters say they would prefer Kennedy Agyapong as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, despite his party affiliation.
The finding stands in sharp contrast to internal NPP rankings, where former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leads comfortably with 70.6% of party support, while Agyapong trails at 21.4%.
The report points to Agyapong’s outsider image and fiery public persona as factors fueling his unexpected cross-party favourability.
Meanwhile, Bawumia remains the dominant force within the NPP, commanding support in 12 of the country’s 16 regions, including both strongholds and key battlegrounds such as Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra.
His Northern roots are cited as a strategic advantage, potentially helping the NPP gain traction in historically NDC-leaning regions.
However, the report flags resistance zones like Volta and Western North as areas requiring targeted outreach. As the 2028 race looms, analysts say the NPP must balance Bawumia’s regional dominance with Kennedy Agyapong’s unique appeal across the aisle.
