President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his call for immediate accountability over the violent incidents that marred the 2024 general elections, directing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to swiftly conclude investigations and ensure all perpetrators face justice.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue held in Koforidua by the National Peace Council, President Mahama emphasized that timely justice is crucial for rebuilding public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“The IGP, expedite investigations into these acts of electoral violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he urged, while also disclosing that the Attorney General is preparing a report to be submitted to Cabinet for the payment of compensation to victims and affected families.

The dialogue, which brought together political actors, civil society organizations, and peacebuilding stakeholders, sought to assess the conduct of the 2024 polls and find sustainable solutions to prevent future election-related disturbances.

President Mahama also credited the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999) for contributing to a reduction in politically motivated violence through the disbandment of vigilante groups.

He reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for impunity, adding, “The disbandment of party vigilante groups through the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act was a step in the right direction.”

With public pressure mounting for transparency and justice, Mahama assured Ghanaians that ongoing electoral and security reforms will prioritize redress for victims and uphold democratic integrity.
