The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons is calling for the immediate passage of the Firearms Regulation Bill following the tragic death of a Bimbilla Senior High School student during the Fire Festival in the Northern Region.
The student was reportedly struck by a stray bullet, highlighting what the Commission describes as a dangerous trend of reckless firearm use, especially during traditional celebrations.
Speaking to ABC in the Morning, Acting Head of Communication and Media, Carl Nii Anyetei Sowah, blamed the increasing misuse of weapons on the absence of a strong legal framework.
“The swift passage of this bill will empower the commission to enforce reforms and crack down on illegal weapon possession,” he said.
Sowah emphasized that without legal backing, efforts to regulate firearms and prevent further tragedies remain severely limited.
