Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has called for calm and restraint in the wake of renewed tensions in the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Dr. Boamah urged all parties involved to prioritise peace and allow dialogue to guide the resolution process.
“We have once again called for restraint in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s dedication to pursuing peaceful and lawful solutions.
The Bawku conflict, deeply rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disagreements, has often erupted into violent clashes, affecting lives and threatening security in the Upper East Region.
The latest unrest has sparked public concern, with reports of renewed violence further complicating efforts to restore stability.
In response, security forces have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order, while government officials and traditional leaders continue mediation efforts.
Dr. Boamah’s renewed appeal forms part of a broader government and civil society push to end the recurring violence in the area.
The Defence Minister stressed that restoring peace in Bawku requires “cool heads to prevail” and a firm commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue.
His statement reflects the urgency with which authorities are approaching the situation, as they work to de-escalate tensions and create space for long-term peace-building initiatives.
