The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) is set to consult its members on whether to suspend its ongoing strike following discussions with the government.

The association held a meeting with the Minister of Education on Monday, August 17, to address concerns that led to the industrial action.

GAUA General Secretary, Charles Aidoo, described the discussions as “very fruitful and very frank”, noting that the two sides reached agreements on some of the issues raised by the association.

He said the outcome of the meeting would now be presented to members, who would determine whether the strike should be suspended.

“We’ve made some agreements, and then we want to meet our constituents, discuss the petition from the minister to our constituents, and we’ll get back to the minister,” he said in an interview on Citi FM.

Mr Aidoo said the association expects to communicate its members’ decision to the Education Minister within 48 hours.

He expressed hope that the consultations would result in an end to the strike, stressing that members were eager to resume their duties.

“So, all things being equal, if everything falls into place, I’m sure we’ll all come to work. We all miss work. We want to come to work. We want to ensure that the universities grow.”

The strike has disrupted administrative and academic activities across some public universities, with examinations reportedly deferred and university hospitals also affected.

According to Mr Aidoo, the withdrawal of services by university administrators has also impacted key institutional operations, including financial transactions, procurement, appointments and promotions.

Despite the disruptions, he expressed optimism that the latest engagement with government and the subsequent consultations with members could pave the way for a resolution.
