National Executive Committee Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Tan Sackey, has rejected claims that the NDC administration is being slow or indecisive in addressing the illegal mining menace.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning, Sackey defended the government’s approach, stressing that steps are being taken to establish a long-term and sustainable framework to combat galamsey. “There is no issue of delay. A lot is being done,” he stated.
According to him, the government is not only working behind the scenes but is also preparing the groundwork to declare a state of emergency if necessary.
“This is not just about rushing into action — it’s about building the right systems that can tackle illegal mining for good,” Sackey explained.
He referenced the government-backed task forces, including the GoldBod initiative and the Blue Water Guards as part of ongoing coordinated efforts to enforce mining regulations and shut down illegal operations. Sackey insisted that these efforts reflect a serious commitment to ending environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
“The task force and related interventions show that the government is not taking this lightly,” he said, urging critics to give the administration room to roll out its full strategy.
