The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) has praised the Ghana Education Service (GES) for reinstating Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across all pre-tertiary schools nationwide, describing the move as a much-needed restoration of stakeholder collaboration in education.
According to IFEST’s Deputy Director, Patrick Apea-Danquah, bringing teachers back into the PTA structure will significantly enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
Speaking on ABC News GH, Apea-Danquah stated, “It’s something that is commendable and will bring on board the needed resource to groom the children. Taking out the teachers wasn’t the best.”
He pointed to a 2019 decision by a previous government to remove teachers from PTA structures, which he says diluted the effectiveness of the associations.
“Teachers need to share experiences with students in PTA meetings. To bring the teachers back is a perfect thing, and I commend them for it,” he said, adding that the move will foster a stronger educational environment.
The reinstatement was confirmed in a statement released by the Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, on Thursday, July 17.
He said the directive followed orders from President John Mahama and instructed all heads of public Senior High, Technical, and STEM schools to immediately operationalise the new directive.
“This move is aimed at strengthening the collaboration and involvement of parents, communities, and teachers in the delivery of quality education,” the statement noted, promising detailed guidelines in the coming days.
