Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has confirmed that President John Mahama’s administration will continue paying allowances to nursing trainees across the country.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, the Minister stated, “As I indicated in my submission that we are going to maintain the momentum so we are going to continue to do so going forward.”
He emphasized government’s preparedness to motivate nursing trainees and create a healthy working environment despite public concerns over the financial burden.
The assurance comes a day after the Ministry of Health disbursed GHS 462 million to support the training allowances of 120,000 nursing students nationwide.
The payment, which covers a six-month period, fulfills a major campaign promise made by President Mahama during the 2024 general elections.
According to a statement released by the Ministry, the move is part of a broader effort to enhance the welfare of nursing trainees and maintain momentum in the health sector.
“The Ministry views this development as a significant step in improving the welfare of nursing trainees and sustaining the motivation of future health professionals,” the statement read.
It added that the Ministry is committed to working closely with nursing institutions to ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare education.
The Ministry also expressed appreciation to President Mahama for fulfilling his promise and acknowledged all stakeholders involved in the timely release and distribution of the funds.
