Adomako Kusi Appiah, West Africa Director of CUTS International, has called on the government to invoke Ghana’s Competition Law to address rising concerns over DStv pricing.
His comments come in response to the recent threat by the Minister of Communications to suspend the operations of MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, over what many consumers have described as unfair pricing practices.
Speaking on ABC News Ghana, Appiah described the Minister’s threat as a justifiable reaction to public frustration but emphasized that a more sustainable solution lies in the use of existing legal frameworks.
“That law can also address the abuse of dominant positions,” he stated, suggesting that invoking competition law would allow for a more structured and long-term response to market concerns.
He urged the government to adopt a non-threatening and constructive engagement strategy with MultiChoice while using the law to regulate pricing abuses.
“The Minister can decide to pursue this competition law for the long term,” Appiah said, reinforcing the need for regulatory stability in protecting consumer rights without undermining investment.
