National Democratic Congress (NDC) Executive Member, Nii Tan Sackey, has described the recent increase in Ghana’s cocoa producer price as the most significant in 30 years.
Speaking on ABC News, he praised the new rate of $5,040 per tonne as both timely and reflective of global cocoa trends and Ghana’s improving economic outlook.
“This is the best increment in 30 years,” he declared, adding that the development is a clear step toward economic empowerment for cocoa farmers.
Nii Tan Sackey acknowledged that while some farmers may have expected a steeper raise, the pricing must be appreciated in context.
He pointed to the strengthening cedi, easing inflation, and the declining cost of essential goods as factors that would boost real income for rural farming households.
He emphasized that the hike comes with additional incentives that make it more beneficial than surface figures may suggest.
He also urged farmers to consider the broader support government is offering beyond pricing.
“These free items are beyond what they have been receiving,” he said, referencing government investments in free inputs and other resources for cocoa farmers.
He called on the farming community to remain hopeful, adding that the package as a whole marks real progress toward better living conditions and long-term financial stability.
