President John Mahama has announced plans to establish a dedicated fund to support the children of the eight people who died in the Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash on August 6.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during the funeral rites of the late Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna.
According to the President, the fund will be formally launched at the state funeral scheduled for Friday, August 15, and will cater to the educational needs of the victims’ children.
The helicopter crash claimed the lives of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, a former Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, a former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation and former MP for Tamale Central; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Mr Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate for the NDC; and Mr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
Also among the deceased were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, who were members of the crew.
The President explained that the initiative is to ensure that the absence of their parents does not derail the future of the children left behind, some of whom are still in school or as young as two months old.
He further noted that the fund would be open to contributions from individuals and organisations willing to support the cause.
The tragic accident has left the nation in mourning and sparked a wave of solidarity for the affected families.
