Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has confirmed that arrests have been made in connection with the alleged assault on nurses and other health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
Speaking to the media, Mr Akandoh explained that the matter is now under police investigation. “I can tell you that some arrests have been made. Anybody who says otherwise is not speaking the truth and is not ready to help solve the issue,” he stated.
The incident, which sparked outrage after a viral video showed relatives of a patient physically attacking medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department, has prompted calls for swift action.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police to arrest the alleged perpetrators, including one Ralph Saint Williams and his accomplices, warning that failure to act could result in further steps by the association.
The Minister, however, insisted that the police must be given the space to do their work, adding, “No one is above the laws of this country.”
To address the matter, the Minister announced the establishment of a five-member committee made up of a lawyer, an auditor, a human resource officer, a medical doctor, and a nurse.
According to him, the probe will follow a dual approach, with the Ministry handling administrative aspects while the police address the criminal elements.
“These are the two angles we will be working from, so the law will take its own course,” he noted, assuring that the findings will strengthen hospital protocols and improve safety for both patients and health workers.
