Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the United States has lifted the visa restrictions imposed on Ghana earlier this year, restoring five-year multiple-entry visas and full consular privileges.
Ablakwa said the decision was formally communicated to him by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations has led to a successful outcome,” Ablakwa stated in a social media post, hailing the development as a “big win for Ghana.”
The restrictions were introduced in July, limiting Ghanaians to three-month single-entry visas due to concerns over immigration overstays, particularly among students.
The move was part of a wider enforcement campaign rolled out under former U.S. President Donald Trump. Ablakwa said the reversal signals “healthier and stronger” relations between Accra and Washington.
