Political analyst, Nana Agyemang Prempeh has suggested that the government is deliberately stalling on passing the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ bill due to its potential political, economic, and international repercussions.
Speaking on ABC In The Morning on Thursday, April 9, 2026, Mr. Prempeh gave insights into the political dynamics surrounding the bill.
“Gov’t knows the implication when they pass the Anti – LGBTQ+ bill into law that’s why they are playing around it,” he said.
According to Mr. Prempeh, the hesitation is tied to both public perception and the political weight of the issue.
“If you look at the Enthusiasm and the face of the President They all know the conspiracy theory behind it that the moment you sign, a lot of effect will be on your government and that’s why they are running away from it,” he explained.
He further added, “The pill that was given to President Akufo-Addo then is the same pills Ghanaians are giving to President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC.”
The analyst noted that high expectations are placed on governments because they are expected to act on issues they once criticized.
“The reason why people are putting pressure on them apart from the cultural aspect of it, When they were in opposition, the things that they said, President Mahama even in one of the Assemblies of God Convention, said that he appalls it, he doesn’t support it, so the moment you ascend to the throne, much is expected of you something you criticized in opposition,” Mr. Prempeh stated.
He added that the government is unlikely to act urgently on the matter. “From where I sit there is nothing of urgency from the Government, they will delay it but still not pass it,” he said.
According to the analyst, this strategy allows the government to appear responsive while avoiding legal and political fallout. “In the eyes of Ghanaians they are doing something, oh it is going through this stage…. but before the President they will use legalities as it was done by Akufo-Addo and his government to run away from it,” he remarked.
