High Court Throws Out Abu Trica’s Appeal, Orders Extradition to U.S.

The Accra High Court has ordered the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Fredrick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, to the United States after dismissing his application seeking to halt the process.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday, July 2, 2026, clears the way for Ghanaian authorities to surrender Kumi to U.S. officials, where he is expected to face prosecution over allegations of wire fraud, money laundering and his alleged involvement in a romance scam network accused of defrauding elderly victims of more than $8 million.

Abu Trica’s legal team had, on May 19, 2026, filed a certiorari application asking the High Court to quash an earlier decision by the Gbese District Court, which authorised his extradition to the United States. However, the court dismissed the application, effectively upholding the extradition process.

His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the outcome in a Facebook post, indicating that the legal battle is likely to continue at the country’s highest court.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.

The latest decision marks a significant development in the high-profile extradition proceedings, which have attracted widespread public attention since Kumi’s arrest in December 2025.

Earlier in the case, the Accra High Court granted Abu Trica bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after he had spent several months in custody while the extradition request was being considered.

United States authorities are seeking Kumi’s extradition to answer charges stemming from an alleged international romance fraud scheme that prosecutors say targeted elderly victims and resulted in losses exceeding $8 million.

With the High Court dismissing his application and affirming the extradition process, attention is now expected to shift to the Supreme Court should his legal team proceed with an appeal.
