Brazil’s all-time leading scorer Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following the Selecao’s stunning exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old brought the curtain down on his 16-year international career after Brazil suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, ending the nation’s hopes of lifting a sixth World Cup title.
An emotional Neymar was visibly distraught at the final whistle at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Although he converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to reduce the deficit, the goal proved only a consolation as Brazil bowed out of the tournament.
Speaking to reporters after the match, the former captain confirmed that he had played his final game for his country.
“I tried. I tried. It started here at Met Life Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over”, he said.
The announcement marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in Brazilian football history.
Neymar leaves the national team as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 80 goals and provided 59 assists in 130 appearances. He surpassed the legendary Pelé to become the country’s highest scorer and finishes as Brazil’s second-most capped player.
Despite enjoying a glittering career filled with individual accolades and memorable performances, the elusive FIFA World Cup trophy remained out of reach for the forward, who represented Brazil across multiple World Cup campaigns.
For more than a decade, Neymar served as the face of the Selecao, wearing the iconic No. 10 shirt and carrying the team’s creative burden through different generations of players.
His retirement now ushers in a new era for Brazilian football. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) must begin planning for life without its talisman as the national team prepares for the next international cycle under coach Carlo Ancelotti, whose contract was extended until 2030 earlier this year.
While Neymar’s international journey ends without a World Cup winner’s medal, his place among Brazil’s greatest footballers is firmly secured through his record-breaking achievements and lasting impact on the national team.
