President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three distinguished legal professionals for appointment to Ghana’s Supreme Court, a move that is expected to increase the number of justices on the country’s highest court.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, together with renowned legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson.
Justice Amoako Asante brings extensive judicial experience to the nomination, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to the Court of Appeal in Ghana.
The nominations were made in consultation with the Judicial Council, in line with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution governing appointments to the Supreme Court.
Should Parliament approve the nominees following the mandatory vetting process, the composition of the Supreme Court will increase from 18 to 21 justices, further strengthening the country’s apex judicial body.
The three nominees are expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting before their nominations are considered for approval. Upon receiving parliamentary approval, they will be sworn into office as Justices of the Supreme Court.
