Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government as “one of the biggest scams” Ghana has ever witnessed, accusing the administration of failing to live up to its promises.

Speaking on ABC in the Morning on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee criticised the government’s handling of governance issues, particularly its approach to freedom of speech and the prosecution of individuals over public comments.

“This NDC Government is one of the biggest scams that has ever happened to us in this country,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah stated.

His comments followed discussions on the prosecution and conviction of some individuals over alleged false claims and offensive remarks against political figures.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah criticised the decision to jail a young woman who was convicted after making claims that the NDC had buried 32 cows, arguing that the punishment raised concerns about proportionality and access to legal representation.

“Look at the girl who has been jailed for one year, because she said the NDC buried 32 cows, so she is jailed for one year,” he said.

He further questioned the circumstances surrounding her court appearance, claiming she did not initially have legal representation when she entered her plea.

“When she came to court, she didn’t have a lawyer. When a lawyer appeared and said, ‘My Lord, this young lady pleaded guilty without the advice of counsel, I’m here now to provide counsel, let’s take the plea again,’ the judge said no, I’m not going to accept it, and has jailed this girl for one year,” he alleged.

The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP also criticised what he described as an inconsistency between the government’s prosecution approach and its proposed community service legislation, which seeks alternatives to imprisonment for some offences.

“At the same time, the same government claims it is bringing a community service bill to Parliament that there are some offences that people don’t have to go to jail for,” he said.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah argued that democratic governments must avoid using state power to intimidate citizens and restrict criticism, insisting that public officials must accept scrutiny as part of their responsibilities.

His comments add to ongoing political debate over free speech, the limits of public commentary, and the use of criminal laws in addressing alleged misinformation and offensive statements.
