The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed Farouk Aliu Mahama as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Yendi constituency in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. This decision, ratified during the NEC’s meeting on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, represents significant progress in the party’s preparations for the electoral contest.

The confirmation of Farouk Mahama as the parliamentary candidate follows a series of events that unfolded during the party’s parliamentary primaries in Yendi earlier this year. The primary election, held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, encountered disruptions, leading to its inconclusiveness.

During the primary election, an incident occurred where a polling assistant, tasked with handling the ballots of candidate Abibata Shanni Mahama, was assaulted along with other election officials. This disruption prompted the Electoral Commission (EC) to recommend a rerun of the election due to the interference with the vote counting process, which rendered the initial election inconclusive.

In response to the NEC’s decision, Farouk Mahama extended a message of reconciliation and unity to all party members, including his competitor, Ms. Mahama. He emphasized the importance of fostering unity, peace, and solidarity within the party to ensure a resounding victory in the upcoming election.

“Let us ensure unity, peace, and solidarity with the party so that we can achieve a resounding victory in the upcoming election. Let us join forces and work tirelessly towards our shared vision of progress and development,” he stated.

Additionally, the NEC announced other resolutions, including the opening of nominations for parliamentary primaries in the La Dadekotopon Constituency following the resignation of Dr. Joseph Gerald Tetteh Nyanyofio as the party’s parliamentary candidate. Furthermore, nominations will be opened for parliamentary primaries in the Akan constituency due to the passing of the party’s parliamentary candidate, Ambassador Rashid Bawa.

In the Agona West Constituency, the NEC agreed to reinstate Joseph Afankwah as an aspiring parliamentary candidate. The party will subsequently publish guidelines for the conduct of parliamentary primaries in the outstanding constituencies, ensuring a transparent and democratic process for candidate selection.

“The party shall publish appropriate guidelines for the conduct of the parliamentary primaries in the outstanding constituencies,” it said.
