The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has summoned Members of Parliament (MPs) back from their recess for an urgent session on Tuesday, September 3.
This recall follows a communiqué issued by the Speaker on Wednesday, August 7, in response to a formal petition from the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The session is set to convene in the afternoon to address critical governmental issues.
Afenyo-Markin’s petition, dated July 31, expressed the Majority caucus’s dissatisfaction with the indefinite adjournment of Parliament by Speaker Bagbin on July 30.
In his letter, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the importance of reconvening to tackle pressing national matters.
“Mr Speaker will recall that Parliament adjourned sine die on Tuesday, 30 July 2014, at which time the aforementioned items had been duly advertised and scheduled for consideration.
The urgency of these matters necessitates our reconvening to fulfil our constitutional mandate and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The agenda for the September 3 sitting includes discussions such as the Financing Agreement between the Government of Ghana and the International Development Association, tax exemption requests under the One District, One Factory Programme, issues related to the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and the consideration of several bills.
“We wish to emphasise that this requisition is made in the utmost good faith and in the national interest, to enable the Government to discharge its constitutional and democratic obligations to the people of Ghana,” Afenyo-Markin added, underscoring the critical nature of the session’s agenda.
