The National Council of Private Teachers has announced a potential boycott of the upcoming 2024 general elections if the government does not address the ongoing challenges in the educational sector.
The council, which represents private school teachers across the country, is raising concerns over exorbitant taxes on private schools and the government’s exclusion of private institutions from STEM education initiatives.
These issues, they claim, are severely affecting the welfare of private teachers and the overall quality of education.
In an interview, James Kwame Ackon the Executive Director of the National Council of Private Teachers, emphasized the dire situation faced by private educators.
“What we are saying is that there are many taxes in private schools to the extent that private school owners cannot even pay their teachers or workers well,” Ackon stated.
He also highlighted the frustrations of unemployed graduates who, despite having completed their education and passed licensure exams, remain jobless.
“What benefits are we going to get from voting? When I am a graduate with my certificate, my license, my national service, and I am not employed,” he questioned, indicating that the proposed boycott is a last resort if the government fails to act.
