The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent member of the Democracy Hub, has been hospitalised at the Police Hospital following complaints of ill-health.
Alongside him, another member, Fanny Otoo, has also been admitted for medical care after both individuals reported feeling unwell while in police custody.
In a statement, the Police clarified that Otoo first complained of being indisposed on Tuesday, 24th September 2024, while the suspects were being prepared for court.
“The Police sent him to the Police Hospital in Accra, where doctors attended to him and later admitted him for further treatment,” the statement read.
Barker-Vormawor, who later reported feeling sick late that night, was similarly taken to the hospital, where he was also admitted after medical evaluation.
This follows comments from Noah Adamtey, one of the lawyers for the 30+ protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub Group demonstration who spoke to ABC IN THE MORNING, stated that his client had been vomiting throughout the previous day, but attempts to secure medical attention were initially denied.
“As of 11 pm yesterday, Oliver had not been attended to,” he disclosed, expressing frustration over the delay in providing care.
The Police has however, strongly refuted these claims, insisting that at no point was medical attention withheld.
“The Police would like to inform the public that at no point in time have the Police denied these suspects any medical attention,” the statement emphasized. This controversy also includes claims that a German citizen in custody with a gunshot wound had similarly struggled to receive proper care.
