Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the party’s unrelenting efforts have compelled the Electoral Commission (EC) to adopt a more transparent approach ahead of the December 7th general elections.
Speaking on “ABC in the Morning,” he emphasized that the NDC’s push for transparency is necessary to ensure fairness, particularly after calling for an audit of the EC’s IT system during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on October 1st.
“They are transparent because the NDC is up and doing.”
“We are forcing them (EC) to be transparent.”
“We are protecting the democracy of Ghana. We want the sanctity of our electoral processes to be upheld.”
“And we have achieved our aim of making the EC abandon that dirty register they were trying to use. And an illegal person would have been elected through that.”
His remarks came in response to criticism from Percival Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana, who described the NDC’s call for an audit as a waste of time.
Dr. Tanko, however, dismissed Akpaloo’s statement, branding him as a “choreographed” figure who lacks a clear understanding of the electoral processes.
He stressed that the NDC’s concerns stem from legitimate issues of trust and the integrity of the EC’s systems, which must be addressed for a credible election.
Meanwhile, the EC has announced that the revised Provisional Voter Register will be made available within two weeks for further scrutiny by political parties.
Despite the EC’s assurance of a robust system, the NDC maintains its demand for an audit, reiterating its skepticism about the IT system’s reliability in delivering a free and fair election.
