Dr. Ing Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has voiced strong support for the Organized Labour’s planned strike beginning October 10, 2024.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning, on Wednesday, he stressed that the strike is a necessary response, albeit minimal, compared to the severe negative impact of illegal mining activities on the nation’s water bodies.
He described the current state of these water sources as “genocidal,” highlighting the extensive environmental and social damage inflicted by galamsey operations.
In response to the Executive Director of the National Labour Commission, who suggested that the strike was unrelated to the government’s failure to fulfill its commitment to allowances, Ashigbey emphasized that nothing will stop them from protesting until the government act.
He made it clear that the ongoing degradation of water bodies cannot be overlooked, stating that nothing would deter them from protesting until the government takes action.
Ashigbey’s remarks reflect a growing concern among environmental advocates regarding the intersection of labour rights and environmental protection.
