A heartbreaking accident on the Kumasi-Obuasi Highway has claimed the lives of thirteen individuals.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024, when a VIP bus traveling from Kumasi to Enchi in the Western North Region veered off the road and plummeted into a ditch near Kwapia, close to Obuasi.
According to police reports, eleven passengers died instantly, while another succumbed to injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Among the deceased were seven males, five females, and a child, all passengers aboard the ill-fated bus.
The driver, Osei Adu, was among those critically injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he also passed away due to the severity of his injuries.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the bus, with registration number ER 2445-11, was overloaded after picking up several stranded passengers from a broken-down bus along the route.
The bus reportedly lost control while navigating a sharp curve, causing it to skid off the road and into the ditch.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, with police and fire personnel working tirelessly to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
The situation for those who survived remains dire, with reports indicating critical injuries among many passengers.
Two police officers on the bus for escort duties also sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
