The High Court in Accra has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, after he was remanded into custody over charges of false publication.
Abronye appeared before the court on Thursday to seek bail pending trial after his earlier remand generated widespread debate among political figures, party supporters and sections of the legal fraternity.
The bail application was moved by his lawyer and former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, under the leadership of former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
“We move in terms of the motion paper and pray that the applicant be granted bail pending trial,” counsel for the applicant submitted.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai, informed the court that the Republic did not oppose the application.
Following submissions from both sides, the court granted Abronye bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
As part of the conditions attached to the bail, the outspoken NPP communicator is required to report to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) once every two weeks. He has also been directed to surrender all travel documents and barred from travelling outside the jurisdiction without prior approval from the court registrar.
Abronye’s initial remand had triggered strong reactions from sections of the NPP, with some party members and legal commentators describing the decision as excessive and inconsistent with his constitutional rights.
However, the presiding judge defended the earlier remand order, explaining that the court acted out of concern that the accused person could commit another offence if granted immediate bail.
The case has since attracted significant public and political attention, with supporters of the opposition party closely monitoring proceedings.
