A new poll by Global InfoAnalytics has revealed a razor-thin contest between Tamale South MP and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, in the race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama as flagbearer.
The survey, conducted in July, showed Haruna Iddrisu leading with 27 percent support, closely trailed by Asiedu Nketiah at 26 percent. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson followed in third place with 22 percent.
Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director and Head of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, described the race as unusually dynamic despite the absence of a formally declared contest.
The poll results also highlighted Julius Debrah with 11 percent and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa with 8 percent, stressing a sharp divide between the top three contenders and the rest of the field.
Dankwah noted that the popularity of other potential candidates, such as Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, would be tested in future polls should they formally enter the race.
The findings come at a time when several high-ranking members of the NDC are embarking on “Thank You Tours” and “Health Walks,” moves widely interpreted as early campaign activities to court the grassroots.
While the party’s constitution mandates an internal election for flagbearer selection, the latest poll suggests a fiercely competitive race ahead, one that contrasts sharply with the 2019 contest that delivered John Dramani Mahama an easy victory.
