The International Union of Food (IUF) and the General Agricultural Workers’ Union of TUC (GAWU) have urged Ghana and countries in the sub-region to fully implement the Work in Fishing Convention (2007) C188 to address the growing challenge of child labour in the fishing industry.
The call was made at the opening of the Africa Seafood Workers Conference held in Accra today.
Acting IUF General Secretary, Kristjan Bragason, highlighted that the conference was designed to provide a platform for stakeholders to develop a policy framework that incorporates best practices in the fishing sector.
He emphasized that the adoption and enforcement of the C188 Convention remain critical to protecting children and ensuring decent working conditions for fishery workers.
The Africa Seafood Workers Conference brought together industry players, trade unions, and policymakers to deliberate on strategies that could strengthen labour standards.
Organisers stressed that effective implementation of C188 would not only protect children from hazardous work but also contribute to a sustainable and ethical fishing industry across the sub-region.
