The Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Korkor Laurette Asante, has expressed deep disappointment over the government’s allocation of GHC 51.3 million to the proposed Women’s Development Bank in the 2025 budget.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, she stressed that the amount is insufficient to establish a fully operational bank, citing the Bank of Ghana’s benchmark requirement of approximately GHC 400 million to start a bank.
“Women will be very disappointed,” she emphasized, urging the government to commit to exceeding the benchmark to ensure the bank’s success.
Asante further called for greater female representation in leadership roles, particularly in chairperson positions, to drive initiatives that promote gender equality.
“We must commit to exceeding the benchmark,” she urged, emphasizing the need for dedicated efforts to strengthen women’s financial empowerment.
She encouraged women across the country to actively participate in decision-making and advocate for policies that support gender parity.
