The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of the Attorney General, accusing him of incompetence in connection with the release of GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund for flood relief efforts.
The minority caucus alleges that the release of the funds violated due legal processes, citing ongoing garnishee proceedings involving the Contingency Fund at the time the money was approved.
Addressing journalists in Parliament, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei claimed the Attorney General instructed the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to facilitate the release of the funds despite the pending court proceedings.
She argued that the directive amounted to a disregard for legal procedures and raised concerns about the management of public resources.
“The Attorney General’s letter speaks for itself. It directed the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to give effect to the release of funds from the Contingency Fund notwithstanding the pending garnishee proceedings. Yet the Ministry of Finance subsequently announced that the GH¢350 million had been released,” she stated.
Mrs. Appiagyei maintained that the Attorney General’s conduct demonstrated a lack of competence and undermined the principles of due process.
She said the Minority believes the Attorney General must take responsibility for the matter by either stepping down or being removed from office.
The Minority further stressed that government funds must be administered within the confines of the law, calling for greater accountability and transparency surrounding the release of the flood relief funds.
