The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered three university staff unions the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) to “immediately call off” their ongoing strike action, citing violations of Ghana’s Labour Act.
In a letter dated May 21, 2025, the Commission invoked Section 139(1)(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), after the unions served a strike notice on May 12 over alleged non-implementation of agreed conditions of service stemming from an agreement signed with government on November 12, 2024.
Despite the NLC’s directive and a hearing on May 21, where SSA-UoG failed to appear, the unions defied the order and proceeded with an indefinite strike announced in a press release the same day.
Consequently, the NLC has declined to hear the matter further under Section 161 of the Labour Act, which bars hearing disputes during illegal strikes.
The Commission has urged the unions to call off the strike and formally notify them before resuming any negotiations or hearings.
Representatives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and Ministry of Finance also attended the hearing.
