The Bawku Divisional Police Command has intercepted a Yutong bus loaded with 1,800 rounds of ammunition at the Customs barrier at Binguri, in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.
The bus, with registration number GW 6471-22, was traveling from Kumasi to Bawku when it was stopped on Thursday.
The driver, whose identity has been withheld, was arrested, and the vehicle impounded at the Bawku Divisional Police Command. A police source confirmed to the Ghanaian Times that the arrest followed a tip-off.
The driver is in custody and has provided a caution statement as investigations continue.
The source disclosed that the seized ammunition is under police protection, but no timeline has been set for the suspect’s court appearance. Attempts to get further comments from the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Adamu Seidu, were unsuccessful.
In response to the incident, the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) issued a statement condemning the transportation of the ammunition. MAYA commended the security forces for their vigilance and urged a thorough investigation to identify those behind the illicit cargo.
In a statement signed by its President, Awudu Bagura, MAYA called for immediate action to trace the origins of the ammunition, uncover the intended recipients, and determine its purpose.
The group also emphasized the need for enhanced intelligence and surveillance along major transport routes to prevent similar incidents.
“We commend the security agencies for their diligence and swift action in seizing the bus carrying ammunition,” Mr. Bagura said, urging the government to prioritize national security in the fight against illegal arms trafficking.
