Richard Akpokavie has been elected as the new President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), ushering in a fresh chapter for the organization.
In the highly anticipated elections held on Saturday, Akpokavie secured a resounding victory, polling 44 votes to defeat his challenger, Michael Aggrey, who garnered 19 votes.
The triumph marks a significant moment for Akpokavie, who narrowly missed out on the presidency four years ago when he lost to outgoing president Ben Nunoo Mensah by just seven votes during the 2021 elections.
Akpokavie is no newcomer to the GOC leadership, having served as the General Secretary of the Committee from 2017 to 2021. His extensive experience in sports administration and longstanding involvement in Ghanaian sports were seen as crucial factors that resonated with the voting delegates.
Before transitioning into administration, Akpokavie was a distinguished athlete, captaining Ghana’s national hockey team during his playing career. His background as both a sportsman and administrator gives him a unique perspective on the needs of athletes and the broader sporting ecosystem.
Akpokavie’s election has been met with optimism among stakeholders who view his leadership as a chance to build on past successes while forging a united path forward for Olympic sports in Ghana.
He is expected to outline his vision for the GOC in the coming days, with a focus likely to be on grassroots development, infrastructure expansion, and enhancing Ghana’s international sporting reputation.
The GOC now looks ahead to a new era under Richard Akpokavie’s leadership, as the organization continues its mission to promote excellence, unity, and growth within the Olympic Movement in Ghana.
