The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured candidates and stakeholders that investigations into alleged malpractices and irregularities in the 2024 WASSCE will be completed, and all withheld results will be released by February 28, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on February 7, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, emphasized the council’s commitment to due process.
“The Council has continued its hearing for the affected candidates and has been releasing results as appropriate. The Council wishes to assure all stakeholders that all cases of malpractices will be finalized and also results released by February 28,” he stated.
This announcement comes amid a legal standoff between WAEC and affected candidates. On January 30, 2025, the High Court ruled in favor of four students who sued on behalf of 10,520 candidates whose results were withheld due to suspected examination malpractice.
The court ordered WAEC to release the results immediately, but the council has since filed for a stay of execution, arguing that investigations must be concluded before any results are made public.
The court is expected to hear WAEC’s appeal on February 20.
Legal counsel for the affected students, Martin Kpebu, criticized WAEC’s handling of the issue, stating that the council had failed to provide clear evidence of wrongdoing.
“The lack of transparency has left thousands of candidates in limbo, jeopardizing their academic future,” he argued.
As WAEC moves to finalize its probe, many students and parents remain anxious, hoping for a resolution before university admissions begin.
