Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed concern over a growing injury crisis affecting key members of the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Several first-team players, including Abu Francis, Mohammed Kudus, and Mohammed Salisu, are currently sidelined with injuries, casting doubt over their readiness for the global tournament.
Speaking on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Okraku admitted the situation is troubling but maintained confidence in the team’s ability to respond positively.
“I know we have some challenges with injuries to key players,” he said. “When I look at the list, it’s quite worrying, but I believe in the indomitable spirit of the Ghanaian. When the chips are down, that spirit always comes through.”
He further noted that renewed unity within the team, following the appointment of head coach Carlos Queiroz, could serve as a catalyst for improved performance despite the setbacks.
“There has been a strong sense of unity since the coach’s arrival, and that can inspire both the players and supporters—the 12th man—to rise to the occasion,” Okraku added.
Ghana have been drawn in a challenging Group I alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
As part of their build-up to the tournament, the team is scheduled to play international friendlies against Mexico and Wales, providing an opportunity to assess squad depth and readiness.
Attention is now focused on June 1, when Queiroz is expected to name his final squad for the World Cup, a decision that could hinge on the recovery progress of several injured players.
