The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) says it has repatriated 925 undocumented migrants following a major operation in Accra on Friday, May 16, 2025. According to the GIS, the migrants, most of whom were involved in street begging were picked up during a coordinated swoop and processed for removal.

The deportation began the following day, Saturday, May 17.

In a statement released on Monday, May 19, GIS confirmed that 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians have so far been sent back to their home countries.

“Repatriation was initiated in the morning of Saturday, 17th May, 2025.

At the time of this release, 925 persons have been successfully repatriated, and processes are underway to remove the rest,” the Service stated.

The current population at the designated Holding Centre stands at 2,241, made up of 2,073 Nigeriens, 138 Nigerians, 28 Burkinabes, and one each from Guinea and Mali.

The GIS noted that all detained migrants were profiled and screened in accordance with standard security procedures.

“Immigrants were also segregated based on their gender and age, in line with international best practices,” the statement added.

The Service assured that basic needs including food and medical support are being provided. A clinic is also on standby to attend to any health concerns during the ongoing repatriation process.
