A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party’s leadership to initiate disciplinary proceedings against former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, over what he describes as conduct detrimental to party unity and cohesion.
The petition, submitted to the General Secretary of the party by Charles Opoku, Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for the New Juaben South Constituency, raises concerns over a series of public statements and actions allegedly made by Mr Agyapong.
According to the petitioner, the former lawmaker’s repeated criticism of party officials and public commentary on internal party matters have created divisions within the NPP at a time when the party is attempting to reorganise following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Mr Opoku, who indicated that he has been a committed member of the party for the past 14 years, argued that the conduct in question contravenes Article 3 of the NPP constitution, which requires members to “be truthful and loyal to the party” and “protect and promote the good name of the party.”
One of the issues highlighted in the petition concerns Mr Agyapong’s recent comments regarding the Minority caucus’s position on the stalled Afari Military Hospital project. The petitioner accused the former presidential aspirant of using “outright lies and false fabrications” in his criticism of the party’s handling of the matter.
The petition also expressed concern about “The Base,” a political group that emerged after the party’s presidential primaries. According to Mr Opoku, the activities of the group outside established party structures have generated unease among some grassroots members and could undermine recognised party institutions.
Another issue raised relates to recent media comments allegedly made by Mr Agyapong concerning confidential party information. The petitioner stated that the former MP had indicated he would “attack the NPP party in June/July 2027” and would “never campaign for the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.”
Mr Opoku argued that such remarks have caused anxiety among party supporters and members across the country.
He further urged the party leadership to encourage the immediate disclosure of any information relating to alleged wrongdoing within the party through the appropriate channels.
“If Mr Agyapong possesses evidence of wrongdoing, misconduct or corruption, such information should be presented to the appropriate party organs or relevant state institutions rather than being used as a recurring public threat,” the petition stated.
The petitioner reportedly attached copies of media interviews and related publications to support his claims and requested that the National Executive Committee and other relevant party bodies examine the materials as part of their assessment.
The development comes at a time when the opposition NPP is working to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the 2028 general elections.
