The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially renamed its national headquarters in honour of its late founder and former President, Jerry John Rawlings, as part of activities commemorating what would have been his 79th birthday.
The ceremony, held on Monday, June 22, 2026, also featured the unveiling of a bust of the former President at the party’s headquarters, drawing senior party officials, supporters and dignitaries from across the country.
This year’s commemoration is being observed under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” highlighting the late statesman’s role in Ghana’s political development and democratic governance.
The renaming of the party headquarters serves as a lasting tribute to Rawlings, who founded the NDC and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Fourth Republic. Party leaders described the gesture as an effort to preserve his ideals and ensure that future generations appreciate his contribution to the nation.
President John Dramani Mahama joined leading members of the party to pay tribute to the late leader during the ceremony. In his address, the President reflected on Rawlings’ enduring influence on the NDC and Ghana’s democratic journey.
The unveiling of the bust at the headquarters formed another significant moment of the event, symbolising the party’s continued reverence for its founder and his contributions to public service and governance.
Speaking under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” party officials noted that the commemoration was intended to celebrate the life, leadership and achievements of the former President, whose political career spanned both military and democratic administrations.
Rawlings, who died in November 2020, remains one of Ghana’s most influential political figures. He first led the country as a military ruler before overseeing Ghana’s return to constitutional rule and later serving as the nation’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.
The renaming of the headquarters and the installation of the memorial bust underscore the NDC’s commitment to preserving the legacy of its founder and reaffirming the values and principles he championed throughout his years in public service.
