Former Information Minister and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, Nana Akomea, has officially entered the race for the party’s First Vice Chairman position ahead of the 2026 national executive elections.
Nana Akomea has filed his nomination to contest the position, adding his name to a growing list of aspirants seeking leadership roles as the NPP prepares to elect a new national executive team.
His bid brings years of political, parliamentary and communications experience to the contest.
Nana Akomea served as Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South from 1997 to 2013 before becoming Minister of Information under former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
He later served as the NPP’s Director of Communications, where he was involved in shaping the party’s communication strategy.
He also played a prominent communications role during the NPP’s 2016 presidential campaign, which culminated in the party’s return to power after eight years in opposition.
His decision to seek the First Vice Chairman position is expected to add further competition to a contest for one of the NPP’s key national executive roles.
The First Vice Chairman is among the party’s principal national officers and plays a role in supporting the administration and organisational activities of the party at the national level.
The NPP is expected to vet aspirants for the national executive positions on September 1, 2026, as preparations intensify ahead of the elections scheduled for October.
Reports indicate that 13 aspirants are currently seeking the three vice-chairmanship positions.
Nana Akomea’s entry is therefore set to heighten interest in the race as the NPP moves closer to choosing its next crop of national leaders.
