A nationwide protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi turned violent as police clashed with demonstrators outside the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regional office.

The protest, part of the NDC’s “Enough Is Enough” movement, aimed to present a petition to the Ashanti Regional EC boss.

Tensions escalated when the police barred some protesters from joining NDC executives inside the building, leading to a scuffle.

The situation worsened as barricades were broken and glass doors were shattered.

Amid the chaos, gunshots were reportedly heard, heightening the panic.

“In fact, I was finding a place to hide myself when I heard the shots. Then I got inside and realised that one man had also been arrested,” Luv FM’s Nana Boakye Yiadom told JoyNews.

A policewoman was injured, and three protesters were arrested during the melee. Despite the tension outside, some NDC leaders continued their meeting with the regional commissioner, while agitated supporters chanted and demanded access to the building.

However, the police have denied reports of any gunshots or injuries caused by their officers.

“No demonstrator has been injured by the Police,” a statement read, while they acknowledged that some protesters had been restrained for attempting to breach security protocols.

The standoff has further inflamed the situation as the demonstrators continue to demand justice and accountability from the authorities.
