The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
The decision, which follows disputes over the December 7, 2024, election results, has sparked criticism from Afriyie, who believes the process was nearing completion and the move is both unnecessary and questionable.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One Newsroom on July 2, Afriyie questioned the EC’s rationale, citing that the collation of results had been completed in all but three polling stations.
“According to the EC, they had previously testified under oath in Parliament that only three polling stations remained to be declared. Therefore, the call for a rerun seems unjustifiable,” she said.
She further alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) may be influencing the decision for political gain.
Afriyie insisted that the NPP would not accept the EC’s position, warning that it could affect public trust in the electoral process. “We have gone through all the collation… so what changed?” she asked. With Ablekuma North traditionally seen as an NPP stronghold, the controversy adds to growing national concerns over electoral transparency as Ghana prepares for upcoming elections. All eyes are now on the EC and the NDC for their next steps.
