Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has issued a stark warning that the upcoming Akwatia by-election could descend into chaos akin to “Judgment Day” if immediate action is not taken to curb the rising tide of electoral violence in Ghana.
Speaking on ABC News in the Morning, the MP condemned recent attacks on voters, candidates, and journalists, calling them “a national disgrace” and “a betrayal of the democratic values we hold dear.”
He called on political leaders to publicly commit to peaceful campaigning and urged parties to stop inciting violence in the pursuit of power.
Boateng expressed concern that the failure to act decisively would embolden political thuggery and erode public trust in electoral processes.
“If out of Akwatia, this country is thrown into chaos, it will be because we allowed things to slide for too long,” he said. He stressed the need for “sensible leadership” and a figure with wisdom—“that gray hair”—to stand up and say enough is enough.
While acknowledging that the current government holds the mandate to rule, he cautioned that without a viable opposition and the enforcement of peace, “the people will get tired of the government in office.”
