A Political Scientist at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr Samuel Afriyie, has expressed concern over what he described as the Ghana Police Service’s failure to decisively address the violence that marred the parliamentary re-run in the Ablekuma North constituency.
Speaking on ABC in the morning, he warned that the delay in taking action could undermine public confidence in the police ahead of the September 2 Akwatia by-election.
“It’s quite unfortunate that the police have not been forthcoming with what happened in Ablekuma North rerun,” he noted.
Dr Afriyie emphasised that the police had ample evidence, including video recordings, to identify and arrest perpetrators of the disturbances.
He criticised the apparent lack of urgency, stressing that it “clearly tells you that the Police is being complacent in some of these things.”
According to him, whether the police can be trusted to ensure credible security at future polls will depend largely on how they handle the aftermath of the Ablekuma North re-run violence.
