The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This follows unresolved disputes surrounding the verification and collation of scanned pink sheets used in the December 7 General Election.
According to a statement issued on July 2, the rerun decision was taken “after extensive deliberations” with political parties and was necessary because “Presiding Officers responsible for the selected polling stations could not verify 19 scanned polling station results used for the collation, although they were approved by agents of both political parties.”
The decision comes after a follow-up meeting on July 1 between the EC and representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Both parties, however, maintained their earlier stances: the NDC insisted the election be rerun in all 37 polling stations, alleging that the scanned pink sheets used for the initial collation were provided solely by the NPP.
The NPP on the other hand, argued that results from just three outstanding polling stations should be collated, as all scanned documents had been verified by both parties’ agents.
“It is important for the public to understand that the issue in contention has to do with the fact that 37 pink sheets provided by the NPP and used to collate the results, were scanned copies,” the EC clarified.
The Electoral Commission further explained that while 37 scanned pink sheets were submitted, only 18 were verified and confirmed by the respective Presiding Officers and party agents, eliminating the need for a rerun in those stations. “A rerun will therefore not be held in those polling stations,” the statement emphasized. The EC also appealed to the Ghana Police Service to ensure adequate security during the rerun to prevent disturbances, recalling that supporters had previously stormed the collation centre and destroyed official election documents. “We count on the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security to ensure a safe environment for the conduct of the election,” said Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman, Operations.
